Naledi Masks

The African mask was prized for its magical powers.

The African mask was once presented as part of an elaborate masquerade in which spectators would feel a supernatural presence, a spiritual power to be feared and obeyed, but one who could also sway nature itself, connect them to their own mythic traditions, bring them prosperity and health and protect them in uncertain times.

While their origins are uncertain, masked human figures have been depicted in prehistoric rock paintings. In the early 20th century, European artists became fascinated with the directness and expressive power of the African mask. Those years also saw a radical change in view of African art in general, but masks in particular and ever since, have been taken seriously as bona fide art pieces.
