St. Louis Fine Jewelry Frequently Asked Questions
Jewelry Appraisal Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an appointment?
Please call ahead for an appointment, 314-966-4442, You do not need an appointment, if you are dropping off an item.
I have heard stories of disreputable jewelry stores switching out diamonds. How do I know the diamond I drop off will be the same one I get back?
To protect all parties, we have a thorough drop-off process when we take in an appraisal or repair. We will create a diamond “plot” which is a diagram showing all the natural characteristics of the diamond. We then invite the customer to look under the microscope to verify and sign the plot. For your peace of mind, we leave no room for errors or potential misunderstandings. We recommend only dealing with companies like Neustaedter’s, with a great reputation for doing jewelry appraisals.
Is it necessary for me to bring anything with me to my appraisal?
Yes. Please bring any sales receipts, old receipts, insurance documents, grading certifications or other appraisals.
How often should I update my appraisal?
Most insurance companies require an appraisal to be updated every two or three years. Check with your insurance company.
What qualifications should a jewelry appraiser have?
Absolute first requirement is that the appraiser be a Graduate Gemologist. In this country that diploma is received from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Also important is education in valuation science with the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers (NAJA). Certified appraisers with NAJA earn their credentials through practical exams.
Who needs an appraisal?
